Hyde Park, NY –Anderson Center for Autism recently provided training to the Access Ambassadors at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum to support the FDR Library becoming an Autism Supportive Environment. The training program is grant-funded through Dutchess County’s “Think DIFFERENTLY” initiative. The FDR Library annually hosts thousands of visitors, including many school-aged children, with varying ability levels.

The Autism Supportive Environment Program offers free consultation services specific to each organization or businesses’ needs to create an environment that is supportive to individuals with autism and their families. Lisa Susczynski, Consulting Coordinator for Anderson Center for Autism, explained, “the services we provide may include staff training, design recommendations regarding sensitivity to stimuli, visual supports and safety.” The Access Ambassadors plan to offer events for individuals with special needs, including autism, to create an array of visual supports in the museum, and to make modifications to their website.

Jeffrey Urbin, Education Specialist at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum commented, “This is great, we’re excited about getting started and will be in contact with Anderson for more pointers along the way I am sure.” Susczynski agreed that the initial session “Opens the way for continued collaboration, future consultation and the development of a community event.”

Participating businesses receive an Autism Supportive Environment Certificate of Completion, a decal for display, and listings on Anderson Center for Autism’s website, in marketing materials, and the Autism Supportive Environment resource directory. Businesses interested in participating in the Autism Supportive Environment Program should call: 845-889-9616 or visit www.andersoncenterforautism.org/ase
